McGrath's Castle, Abbeyside
The south facade of McGrath's Castle on a winters day with a man standing on the roadside of Friar's Walk. Behind the man is part of the surrounding wall of the castle and a small cottage.
The castle was built by the McGrath's and was six stories high with two vaulted floors. In the Civil Survey 1654, it is described as a "small castle formerly called McGragh's Castle which is strong and defensible and now possessed by Captain James Oldfield". Parts of the castle collapsed in the 19th century and in the early 20th century. The remaining fragments survived until the early 1960's when they were totally removed. To the right of the photograph is the the entrance to Abbeyside Church and graveyard
